Simpler Recycling 2025 legislation (England)

Discover how the new Simpler Recycling legislation, effective 31st March 2025, will transform recycling in England by standardising the collection of waste, and introducing separate collections for recyclable material.

Simpler Recycling

What is Simpler Recycling legislation?

Simpler Recycling aims to ensure there is more recycled material in the products we buy, and that high quality recycled material can be sourced domestically, enabling packaging circularity in the UK.

How the Simpler Recycling Legislation Aims to Increase Recycling Rates

01.

Standardising recyclable materials so businesses across England are required to separate the same core waste streams, creating consistency in recycling practices.

02.

Reducing confusion around waste separation by introducing clearer rules on what can and cannot be recycled, making compliance easier for businesses.

03.

Improving the quality of recycled materials through better sorting at the point of disposal, which increases the amount of waste that can be successfully recycled.

04.

Increasing accountability for businesses by placing greater responsibility on proper waste management and compliance with recycling regulations.

What Do I Need to Do to Stay Compliant?

Food Waste

If your business produces any food waste — including staff food leftovers — this must be kept separate from general waste and collected as food waste.

Recycling

Common recyclable materials can be collected together as dry mixed recycling. This typically includes paper, cardboard, plastics, and aluminium.

Glass

If your business generates glass waste, it must be separated from other waste streams and collected using a dedicated glass bin.

General Waste

Any remaining waste that cannot be recycled should be placed in a general waste bin for appropriate disposal.
