Hotel Waste Management • 4 Minute Read

A prestigious five-star London hotel faced major waste management challenges: a basement loading bay with tight access, inefficient machinery, and a recycling rate below 10%. Greener World London redesigned their waste system from the ground up — reducing costs, increasing recycling to 80%, and creating a quiet, space-efficient, zero-landfill solution.

This luxury central London hotel operates with extremely limited service space and an underground loading bay accessed via a narrow ramp. Waste volumes were high for the confined footprint, and the hotel needed a compliant, low-noise, and space-saving waste management system that would not disrupt guests or daily deliveries.
The site’s existing waste system was inefficient, noisy, and space-hungry. Large collection trucks could barely access the underground bay, often scraping walls and causing expensive building damage. Collections after 8am clashed with supplier deliveries, leading to congestion in the bay and surrounding streets.
Inside the waste area, a 1100-litre rented bin press and a glass crusher occupied valuable floor space but offered little benefit. The bin press failed to reduce waste volume effectively, and eight 1100-litre bins were still required daily. The glass crusher broke down frequently, forcing staff to half-fill bins to make them movable — wasting time and space.
Noise and exhaust emissions from large vehicles and machinery disturbed both guests and staff, while overall recycling performance remained poor: only glass was separated, with everything else sent for disposal. Recycling stood at just 10%.
High labour costs added to the challenge, as staff had to manually operate unreliable machinery and manage constant collections in cramped conditions.
Greener World London carried out a detailed site audit and worked closely with hotel management to design a new, efficient waste management process tailored to their unique layout.
The first step was to remove the inefficient 1100-litre bin press and glass crusher, eliminating rental and maintenance costs while freeing up space for more practical, lightweight containers. With the additional space, we introduced separate 1100-litre and 240-litre bins for general waste, recycling, and food waste, simplifying the process and improving hygiene.
Food waste segregation was implemented directly at source within kitchen areas — each section now equipped with clearly labelled bins for food waste and mixed recycling. To support staff, we provided comprehensive on-site training and signage to ensure correct separation and compliance.
A compact cardboard baler was installed to handle packaging efficiently. This freed up bin space, allowed cleaner storage, and all bales were collected free of charge for recycling. Dedicated bins for newspapers, magazines, and office paper were also added, collected less frequently to optimise cost and space usage.
To eliminate disruption, all waste collections were rescheduled to take place during the night using smaller, low-noise vehicles. These quieter vehicles navigate the tight ramp safely and allow waste removal before morning deliveries, preventing congestion and improving air quality in the underground area.
All collected waste is now sent for recycling or energy recovery, ensuring zero landfill and significantly improving sustainability performance.
