Hotel Waste Management • 3 Minute Read

A renowned five-star hotel in the heart of London’s West End faced serious waste management challenges — tight access, limited space, and high daily volumes of mixed waste. Greener World London developed a bespoke, zero-landfill solution that improved efficiency, reduced costs, and supported the hotel’s environmental goals.

A five-star ultra-luxury hotel in London’s West End produces up to five tonnes of waste per day, including food, glass, and general waste. Located in one of the busiest areas of the city, space was severely limited, and waste management, while essential, was often pushed down the list of priorities. The hotel also had strong environmental goals, including achieving zero landfill and improving its sustainability credentials.
The hotel’s waste operation was complex and inefficient. A large rotary compactor was installed in the receiving bay to manage waste volume, but the setup raised health and safety concerns with Westminster Council’s Environmental Health Officers (EHOs), since food deliveries were made in the same area.
To manage their growing waste volume, the hotel relied on three different machines:
• A glass crusher
• A food dewatering unit
• A cardboard baler
However, two of these systems caused more problems than they solved. The food dewatering unit failed regularly—operational less than 25% of the time—and the glass crusher created fine glass dust that repeatedly blocked basement drains and increased maintenance costs.
The hotel’s labour costs were high, with two members of the stewarding team required daily just to manage waste processing and equipment operation.
Vehicle access was another major issue. Large collection lorries frequently caused damage to the building and created congestion during mid-morning collections, overlapping with the hotel’s busiest delivery periods. Attempts to move collections earlier in the day led to noise complaints from nearby residents.
In short, the system was costly, disruptive, and inefficient—falling short of the hotel’s environmental and operational standards.
Greener World London carried out a comprehensive review of the hotel’s waste management process, working closely with their operations team over several months to design a tailored, long-term solution.
We began by attending the hotel’s Green Team meetings, helping management identify cost-saving opportunities and practical improvements to meet environmental targets.
The rotary compactor was removed, eliminating both the leasing and maintenance costs. Instead, we introduced more frequent collections of uncompacted waste, which immediately improved site hygiene and reduced operational downtime.
The glass crusher and food dewatering unit were decommissioned, freeing up valuable basement space and cutting maintenance and labour expenses. In their place, we supplied additional food and glass bins, arranged for regular bin swaps (full for empty), and scheduled collections around the hotel’s service patterns.
This change also reduced manual handling risks from moving crushed glass and allowed two full-time staff members to be reassigned to other duties — saving significant weekly labour costs.
To address space and access issues, we replaced the contractor’s large collection vehicles with smaller, more manoeuvrable units that could enter the hotel’s loading bay without causing structural damage or obstructing traffic.
These smaller vehicles also allowed for quiet, late-night collections, eliminating noise complaints and separating waste removal from food delivery hours — improving hygiene and workflow.
Finally, all collected waste was directed to recycling and energy recovery facilities, guaranteeing zero landfill and raising the hotel’s recycling rate to 85%.

• Reduced staff involvement and labour costs by two full-time positions, seven days a week.
• Eliminated building damage and congestion from large collection vehicles.
• Resolved EHO compliance concerns with separate waste and food delivery timings.
• Achieved zero landfill with a current recycling rate of 85%.
• Provided a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient waste management process that aligned perfectly with the hotel’s luxury standards.
